Town Approves $20,600 for Easements to Rehabilitate Willow Street Bridge

Key Points

  • Appropriates $20,600 for bridge reconstruction easements
  • Funded via Chapter 90 state aid
  • Eminent domain process required for land acquisition
  • Ensures protection of the town’s critical water main

Article 30 authorized the Board of Public Works to acquire temporary and permanent easements through eminent domain for the reconstruction of the Willow Street Bridge. Town Engineer Ken Ryan explained that the project requires a redesign and minor expansion of the bridge footprint to ensure proper rehabilitation and water flow. The $20,600 for land damages will be funded through previously authorized Chapter 90 funds.

The Advisory Board unanimously recommended the article, noting that obtaining these easements is the essential first step before construction activities can begin. Residents raised questions regarding the impact on recreational river use and existing infrastructure. Malcolm Gail asked if the bridge would be raised for kayakers, to which Ryan responded that while it will be slightly wider to allow more water flow, the height is not expected to change significantly. Resident Dave Carrier confirmed with officials that the project would not interfere with the essential water main installed several years ago.

Motion: The board of public works moves that the town vote to authorize the town of Marshfield to take by imminent domain temporary and permanent easements for the purpose of reconstructing the Willow Street Bridge and further to appropriate the sum of $20,600 for the purpose of appraised land damages.
